Stems 30–80 cm tall, erect, striated, with few branches at top.
Radical leaves oblong, 5–20 cm long, long-petiolate, upper ones sessile, apex acute, base contracted, remotely and deeply pinnatifid, segments 4, ovate-oblong, with apex obtusih and topped by a spine 2 mm long, basal leaves largest, upper leaves gradually smaller and less divided, oblong to lanceolate.
Heads terminal, solitary, ca. 4 cm in diameter; involucre 10–16×3–6 mm, bracts free, spatulate, spinulose, outer gradually shorter. Corolla 9–11 mm long, limb shorter than tube.
Achenes cylindric, 7×2 mm, densely long hairy; pappus 1–3 mm long. Chromosome number,

台灣 : in mountainous areas in northern and central parts of the island, not collected for more than half a century, probably extinct in the wild. Locally cultivated as a medicinal herb.
